Our Lord Jesus Christ said: "Therefore, whatever you want men to do to you, do also to them" Matthew 7:12. We are surrounded by people who are lonely and unhappy. A simple two-sentence conversation will prove that. Sometimes, for our own comfort, we prefer to keep our distance from them. We prefer to withdraw, lest we catch their negative energy. We feel more comfortable in the company of someone who is happy and enjoying the moment. And although that is the trend, and we find a way to justify our behavior, is it kindness if we leave the lonely to seek more pleasant company?  The law says that what we give is what we receive, and if we help someone, we ourselves will be helped. Of course we can only share what we have, but we can share whatever little we have to begin with, and in this way it will grow, and we will all have more. This is how divine laws work, always expanding never taking anything away from us.

There is great pain in people around us, and regardless of what is causing them such pain, we need to help. There is an incentive:  as you help others, you yourself will also be helped.  We all need God's help in different ways. The Bible says, “Now we that are strong ought to bear the infirmities of the weak, and not to please ourselves. Let each one of us please his neighbor for that which is good, unto edifying.Romans 15: 1-2. We cannot know everything that a person is suffering, and we may not have the solution to their problems, but if at least the person realizes that he is not alone, our help has been major, because loneliness is one of the things that causes more despair. The positive effect does not come through our words but the love carrying the words. That is what makes the difference. Many who are at the beginning of their spiritual journey are unaware that they are never alone. "If you knew Who walks beside you on the way that you have chosen, fear would be impossible." ACIM T18.iii.3. But the vast majority has no idea Who walks beside them, and they feel lonely.

While it is true that each individual is living the life he has chosen or he has attracted due to his way of perceiving things, it is also true that we all, through our lives and due to lack of understanding, have adopted beliefs that didn’t help us, that even brought us pain. Because we understand that, we can – with love -- help others become aware of what is happening in their lives.  Some may be receptive to our words, others may not want to hear it because that would require considering different things or new points of view.  That would mean making changes, and that takes courage. The challenge seems too big, and they prefer not to make changes. But not everything is solved with prayer, good wishes, and hope. There are times when action is required by the individual. Your way of being, your beliefs, your perceptions brought you to where you are today. Do you want a different life? Act differently, but not differently according to your own ideas or conclusions. God's power is what transforms lives, but His help is available at the moment you say "Dear God, I cannot do it by myself.  I need your help." He is waiting for that sign.

“He (God) knows His Son. He gives without exception, holding nothing back that can contribute to your happiness.  And yet, unless your will is one with His, His gifts are not received. .. Yet in his lonely, senseless wanderings, God's gifts go with him, all unknown to him. He cannot lose them. But he will not look at what is given him. He wanders on…perceiving how his little lot but dwindles, as he goes ahead to nowhere. Still he wanders on in misery and poverty, alone though God is with him, and a treasure his so great that everything the world contains is valueless before its magnitude…Yet is he really tragic, when you see that he is following the way he chose, and need but realize Who walks with him and open up his treasures to be free?... You cower fearfully lest you should feel Christ's touch upon your shoulder, and perceive His gentle hand directing you to look upon your gifts…This is the lesson that His (Holy Spirit) giving holds, for He has saved you from the solitude you sought to make in which to hide from God. He has reminded you of all the gifts that God has given you.” ACIM L.166.

We are fortunate to recognize that we were not alone, but recognition came because one day we decided that what we were doing was not bringing the desired results, even though we were trying to live according to what we thought was the will of God.  We need to understand that if we are mistaken, even if it is honestly mistaken, we will not receive the manifestation of His promises. Good intentions are never enough. Our will needs to be aligned with His will, there are no shortcuts. The good thing is that we did not settle for going through the motions, and God, our Father, honored our desire and our search and gave us His Teacher to guide us. The Word of God says “And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart” Jeremiah 29:13. God requires from us a genuine desire and then He manifests His love and power in our lives. These are not just words. This is a real experience. Wonderful changes in your life will begin to take place.

Although God created us and gave us all the same portion to begin with, some have learned to make better use of the gifts received, which is why everyone is at a different station of the journey. Those who are behind unfortunately compare themselves with others and do not understand the reason for the difference. They blame the world and their own conditions of life and feel deprived and unjustly treated. They don’t realize that in the moment in which they choose God, God will transform their lives. The miracle is going to take place. We are the proof. Our job sometimes is to sow the seeds, other times to water the plant, but the growth is always brought by God.  He alone gives us love and compassion, and that is what we, as His representatives, must give. Whatever you do, permeate it with love.  That is what the others will perceive and what will make the difference.
