WHAT IS TRUE LOVE # 15106

The Bible says. "He who says he is in the light, and hates his brother, is in darkness until now. He who loves his brother abides in the light, and there is no cause for stumbling in him." 1 John. 2: 9-10. True love, which most of us don’t quite understand, is the very essence of God and of us also, because we are His children. It is a love in which there is no duality. Love only gives itself. It is the light that illuminates our path, and through us illuminates the path of others so they won’t stumble. In this kind of love, duality does not exist; therefore, love could not omit any of our fellowmen.  Perhaps we are not aware of how many people we love, but we know whom we don’t love because we consider them unworthy of our love. That is proof that we are acting against our own nature. The deep states of our being are love, peace, and joy. These states don’t have opposites or duality because they come from God. If we were genuine, without alterations of any kind, we would live under this state of enlightenment. God only wants us to become again the beings He created.

Unfortunately, after our fall from grace, our minds were divided, and a portion of each mind – which we call the lower mind – began to experience emotions.  All emotions are part of the dualistic mind and are subject to the law of opposites meaning you cannot have good without having bad. Example, joy and pleasure; joy is a permanent state which springs from our being -- what we call higher self -- while pleasure is always derived from something outside us. What gives us pleasure today will bring pain tomorrow, or it will abandon us and bring suffering. What we referred to “love”, may be pleasurable for a while, but it is a needy condition that can turn into its opposite in one second.  So many "loving" relationships after the initial euphoria had past, oscillate between "love" and hate, attraction and attack. These are completely unstable relationships. And it is not true love, because it comes from someone else, external to us. This illusion of love ends in disillusionment because it is not real. Real love, the one that only gives without expecting something in return, last forever.

The negative, opposing emotions we experience are only the shadow of what is eternal, with which God endowed us, and only the eternal is true. These opposites are illusions, have no reality, and only have the power we have given them. The duality in which we live pushes us constantly to judge others by comparing one situation with another. If we didn’t have to compare ourselves with the others, how different our lives would be!  If we were to perceive all our fellow companions as heading toward the same finality, wouldn’t we try to help each other? The Apostle John said, "Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.  For all that is in the world -- the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life--is not of the Father but is of the world.” 1 John 2: 15-16. These are the two states. Either we are guided by the world our physical senses are showing us, the world ruled by the ego, or we turn to God and allow ourselves be guided by our intuition. Intuition is the voice of God within us, the Holy Spirit. This Voice will never lead us astray.

When we invite the Holy Spirit as our guide, He takes us back to God, this is the job God gave Him, to help us undo that which we did by acting against our nature. Is it not easier to love than to hate? You don’t have to explain and justify love. But when we hate someone, or when we refuse to forgive the offense against us, it takes much effort to justify our position. Let’s simplify our lives by sharing our love with everyone. At times we may think that making these changes is too difficult. We believe we are too tired to go back where the mistake began, but we don’t need to go back to that point. The Holy Spirit only points us in the right direction. He knows how to use our mistakes and turn them into lessons to help others who are going through similar situations. God is not asking us to separate ourselves from our relationships or established friendships. On the contrary, love should be extended to everyone, but we could ask God to sanctify these relationships so that we may help one another and grow together, with unity of purpose.

“Perhaps you think that different kinds of love are possible.  Perhaps you think there is a kind of love for this, a kind for that; a way of loving one, another way of loving still another.  Love is one.  It has no separate parts and no degrees; no kinds nor levels, no divergencies and no distinctions.  It is like itself, unchanged throughout.  It never alters with a person or a circumstance.  It is the Heart of God, and also of His Son… think of one who makes the journey with you, and who came to learn what you must learn.  And as he comes to mind, give him this message from your Self:  I bless you, brother, with the Love of God, which I would share with you.  For I would learn the joyous lesson that there is no love but God's and yours and mine and everyone's.” ACIM L.127.1 y 12.

True love is already within us. When we feel incomplete and look for someone else to love us back that we may feel complete, we will not receive true love. Lack of love should not be your motivation to be with someone else, but, rather, wanting to share the love you already have with someone who also wants to share his love with you. That is true love. Before committing to someone else ask God to help you to enter the relationship without expecting anything in return. Ask God to teach you to love your fellowman with true love.

We have a shared identity with our brothers and sisters, because God decreed thus. His Word says, "Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate.”Mark 10: 9. We need to remove any barriers that we had interposed between us and the other person, just to block our love to him. Let’s remember that each and every one is also a child of God. Despite the external differences we may perceive, they were also created originally with the same attributes God gave each of us. The point here is not to exclude anyone from our love but to extend God’s love and compassion to everyone. At first, you may only be able to do it during your moments of meditation, because it is difficult to see some of them with our physical eyes and send them our love. But the important thing is to start practicing it. Wish everyone, without exception, the love, joy and peace of God.  Bless every one; it is not so hard to do.

"The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with you all."  2 Corinthians 13:14
