The Bible says, "Beloved, if our heart does not condemn us, we have confidence toward God. And whatever we ask we receive from Him, because we keep His commandments and do those things that are pleasing in His sight.” 1 John 3: 21-22. One of the emotions with which we all deal with every day, and at the same time a very damaging one, is guilt or self-condemnation. The root lies in our relationship with God our Father. Guilt goes hand in hand with fear. Deep inside in our minds, we are aware of having disobeyed God, we believe that God is angry with us and we will punish us. However, once we understand that this is a situation that has a solution, and we begin to make the necessary changes, our perception begins to change in reference to the people with whom we interact, and we end up forgiving the world that we used to think was responsible for the unfair life we had. The Scripture clearly says that it is our heart, or consciousness, that accuses us, or makes us feel united to God considering that His will is ours. If we have inner peace, we are aligned with God.
Charles H. Spurgeon who is known as the "Prince of Preachers” said: "The law knows nothing about forgiveness. The law says: 'Do this, and you will live; disobey and you will die.’ The law was sent only to convince and to condemn. "It is our consciousness which tells us that if God didn’t punish evil, He wouldn’t be a fair judge. Therefore He will punish me for my wickedness." The law came through Moses, and thousands of years later God said through His messengers: “I, even I, am He who blots out your transgressions for My own sake; And I will not remember your sins.” Isaiah 43: 25. God gives to each generation the message they need to hear to bring them closer to Him. God is still talking to us, giving us lessons which are relevant for our times. The human race is changing, it is evolving, and here is one promise for us: “For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, …nor things present nor things to come,… nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 8:38-39. These promises represent the potential of what we could experience, but first we need to make them ours.
Our Lord Jesus Christ died and rose again to remove our guilt, but ¿do you feel innocent? You need to know that God loves you with unconditional love, despite your faults because to Him you are His beloved child, and nothing can separate you from His love. It is not enough to hear His promises, we need to make them ours, and we know that we made them ours when we experience the peace it carries. We cannot say, "I feel guilty, but God's Word says that there is no guilt, so everything must be well.” The point here is that if you feel guilty, there is still something which needs solving. It doesn’t do any good to compare ourselves to others because we will feel better than some and worse than others. Each one is in a different place. There are people that because of their diligence are more advanced, and others that have been negligent have postponed their development for later and have not advanced as they could have. It is best to evaluate ourselves by reviewing where we were six months ago, or a year ago. Are we progressing? That is what it is important.
Our stay here is temporary. Right now we are here, but we don’t know about tomorrow. Based on this, why not invest in what is eternal? And do it trusting God’s love, not the fearful punishment we previously believed was awaiting us. It doesn’t do any good to invest our time, money, and effort to accumulate material things. We won’t be taking any of it with us. The more we simplify our life, the lighter our journey will become. Make the decision to invest in what really is important, like getting rid of anything that robs us of peace, or those feelings of guilt we carry, because we know we did something that was not right. Let’s start correcting those things. God has infinite patience and He knows that with His help we can do it. Determine to start this day with a blank page. Seek the peace of God. Remember that if your heart does not accuse you, it is a sign you are doing fine and that nothing shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
“Little child, this is not so. Your ‘guilty secret’ is nothing, and if you will but bring it to the light, the light will dispel it. And then no dark cloud will remain between you and the remembrance of your Father, for you will remember His guiltless Son, who did not die because he is immortal. And you will see that you were redeemed with him, and have
never been separated from him. In this understanding lies your remembering, for it is the recognition of love without fear. There will be great joy in Heaven on your homecoming, and the joy will be yours. For the redeemed son of man is the guiltless Son of God, and to recognize him is your redemption. ACIM T.13. ii.9.
The love of God and His mercy towards all of us must be immense. Obviously there are things we do not fully understand. We do not understand a love that gives everything without asking anything in return. It makes us wonder ¿who are we that God loves us so? But we don’t need to understand it in order to enjoy it. We just need to accept it. It is evident that God has given us a greater value than the value we gave to ourselves or we gave to others. This is good news. We need to admit that there is so much we still need to learn, isn’t it?
"The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with you all." 2 Corinthians 13:14
